Much of contemporary art generates controversy because it does not conform to what we have traditionally considered "art" based upon our aesthetic perceptions and technical skills. The focus in contemporary art has shifted from representing reality or demonstrating technical skill toward creating works of art that explore and express new ways of thinking about ideas and concepts, as well as expressing a wide variety of social commentary. This shift in focus for contemporary art brings up another important question: Are the ideas or messages in contemporary artworks of greater importance than their visual and emotional impact? Many times, the idea or message in contemporary art is most significant. Contemporary works of art are designed to make viewers think, challenge established social norms, and challenge the political and social status quo. Unless one understands the artist's intent behind the creation of the work, the work may appear to be confusing or lacking meaning. While the artistic message conveyed by contemporary artworks may be important, the ability of the artwork to evoke an emotional response in the viewer and how it makes the viewer feel or react can also be just as important. If an audience member cannot connect with the artwork on an emotional level, they will be less likely to be able to understand the artist's message effectively.

Preferably, art must be balanced in terms of meaning and impact. An excellent idea that is not presented interestingly may seem closed off, and a beautiful piece of art that is not thought-provoking may not always be of long-term importance. The modern art trend ought to strive to establish the relationship between concepts and the viewers' experience to make complex concepts easier to comprehend without diluting them. According to Reid (2024), the ambiguity of contemporary art is intentional, and it invites active interpretation and engagement of the audience. This is the interactive feature that makes art applicable even in the fast-changing world because it can capture various views and experiences.
